โฐ Scheduling

Scheduling sets a story to go live on its own at a date and time you choose, so you can write ahead and publish later. This page will guide you through scheduling a story, changing or cancelling a schedule, and what happens when the time arrives.

Scheduling a storyโ€‹

  • Open the story and find "Publishing" in the settings panel.
  • Choose "Scheduled".
  • Set "Goes live at" to a date and time.
  • Press "Save".

The story stays hidden until then and goes live on its own, followed by a site update. In the "Stories" list it shows under "Scheduled".

The same publish rule applies as for publishing straight away: a story must belong to a topic before it can be scheduled. See Drafts and publishing.

Changing or cancelling a scheduleโ€‹

  • To move the time, change "Goes live at" and save.
  • To publish now, choose "Published" and save.
  • To cancel, choose "Draft" and save. The story stays hidden.

When the time arrivesโ€‹

At the scheduled time the story becomes published, and a site update follows. Readers therefore see it shortly after "Goes live at", once the rebuild has finished, rather than on the dot. See Rebuilds.

tip

If a story must be live by a set time, such as 9:00 am, schedule it a few minutes earlier to leave room for the rebuild.

Scheduling in a threadโ€‹

A scheduled story in a topic that is not published yet stays off the site until the topic is published, even after its time passes. Check that the topic's opening story is live, or scheduled earlier. For a series, set each entry's covers date as well, so it sits on the right day. See Series.

Best Practicesโ€‹

  • Schedule series entries ahead: a daily report can be written the evening before.
  • Check the "Scheduled" filter weekly to see what is about to go out.
  • Keep times in mind across time zones: readers see the story when it goes live, wherever they are.
