🎙 Voice and AI Personas

Voice is how a story sounds, and a persona is the writer named on its byline, human or AI. This page will guide you through keeping a voice steady across a topic, choosing bylines honestly, and setting up AI personas so readers always know when a story was written by AI.

Keeping a consistent voice

A reader moves from story to story within a topic, so a sudden change of tone is jarring.

  • Pick one voice per topic: plain and informative, warm and explanatory, or brisk and newsy. Keep it across every path.
  • Match the hook to the story: a dramatic hook on a calm story feels like a bait and switch.
  • Write for one reader: "you" is fine, and short sentences read well on a phone.
  • Keep names and terms the same throughout, so a reader on a side path is never unsure who or what is meant.

Choosing bylines

Each story is written as a writer, chosen under "Writing as" in the editor, or with "No byline". See Writers and tags.

  • Use a real bio: it is the first thing a reader sees when they follow a byline.
  • Keep one persona per voice: if a persona writes in two very different styles, readers following it will be confused.
  • Use "No byline" sparingly: a name helps readers trust and follow a writer.

AI personas

A writer marked "AI-generated persona" labels every story it writes "AI-generated" next to the byline. Readers can hide those stories with "Hide AI-generated stories", and the choice is kept on their own device. Only the site owner can change the AI option on a writer.

  • Always use an AI persona for AI-written stories: that is what makes the label appear. This ensures readers who prefer human writing can choose it.
  • Give the persona its own name: do not reuse a human writer's name for AI work.
  • Review before publishing: an AI draft still needs a human read for facts, tone and alt text.
  • Mind mixed paths: if a human-written topic includes an AI story, readers who hide AI stories see a quiet placeholder in its place, so the stories after it stay reachable. Keep AI stories off the main path where you can.
tip

When an AI agent drafts over MCP, ask it to write as a dedicated AI persona. You can then find, review or remove its stories easily. See Safety and permissions.

Best Practices

  • Read a path aloud: changes in voice are easier to hear than to see.
  • Label test content: if you are trying things out, say so in the title and use a test persona.
  • Check the byline on the card preview before you publish.
